![]() This is also the first very long arc in One Piece. In Baroque Works, the crew as we know it begins to take form (five out of the nine current crew members are already introduced and very fleshed out). It returns Nami to her home in Cocoyashi Village, sets up some later great social commentary, and hits both the storytelling and shonen action beats as well as any in the series. Of course, volume 1 is a great starting point, but if we’re going for what defines One Piece without too many spoilers of the previous arcs, I’d go for volumes 9–11, Arlong Park. There are also great character moments that build our relationship with every character and give us a favorite crew member to love and latch on to for the following volumes (Luffy walking away from Bellemere explaining Nami’s past or Zoro’s declaration that he will never lose again, for example). In these opening pages, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji are all introduced and expounded upon. Each mini arc within the East Blue arc is set with the introduction of a character and a description of his or her tragic backstory. These first volumes are largely set up, of both character and formula. Luffy rescues and recruits him into his pirate crew. The story begins with Pirate Hunter Roronoa Zoro captured by the Marines. The world of One Piece is split into four seas, and it’s the East Blue that Luffy calls home. The East Blue is where it all begins for One Piece, both figuratively and literally. I’m not going to give away anything huge, but be warned. Now…the nature of how I’m writing it means there’s going to be SOME minor spoilers because I need to talk about the next arc with the context of the previous arc in mind. At current, there are nine arcs (according to Viz Media’s titling system) with several subarcs, and one time skip…that did it better than Naruto. What I’m going to do is break down every major arc, lay out its strengths and weaknesses in the larger context of One Piece, and then say whether it’s a good jumping off point. ![]() ![]() Rafe to Barry: "If we do this, you know I'll take care of you." Rafe ends up changing his mind at the last moment and they have a heated argument because of it. Barry then hires a guy to do it, having asked Rafe whether he's sure. Rafe gets more and more paranoid as the days go by, finally asking Barry to kill Ward and paying him to get the job done. ![]() They both sit and drink together, which leads to a drunken Barry confessing that the only way that their brilliant plan might backfire is if Ward decides to snitch on them. Rafe throws a party at Tannyhill, which Barry attends. They quickly manage to sell the gold, both allowing themselves to have a more relaxed life style throughout the season. They then resume their friendship and newly found partnership, Rafe taking Barry to his new boat and discussing business with him. The two manage to steal the Cross and decide to melt it so that they can sell it without being traced. Rafe mentions that he's ready to move past the little bump they had in the previous season if Barry is on the same page as him. He proposes a plan where Barry steals the Cross of Santo Domingo from Ward (who was planning to give it away without consulting him) and they split the money. The two meet again when Rafe goes looking for Barry in Season 3. Rafe, determined to not be taken alive, attempts to flee the Outer Banks with Barry but Barry betrayed Rafe and led him into a trap which leads to Rafe's arrest. The morning after Rafe tries to drown Sarah, he wakes up at Barry's house and reads a text that he got from Ward and learns what had happened while he was gone. Rafe spends the night and the following days at Barry's place since he's not on speaking terms with his father and has nowhere else to go. When Rafe and Barry doesn't find them, they leave. Sarah, John B and JJ hear Rafe and Barry coming and quickly hides in the tree. Rafe and Barry go together to The Chataeu to kill Sarah and John B, because they don't want them to snitch on them if they get caught. Later on in the season, Barry and Rafe meet up again after Kelce spotted John B and Sarah back in town. Barry refuses to do so because he knows doing that would kill her, and he tries to talk Rafe out of it, arguing that Rafe doesn't need more bodies showing up but he fails to talk him out of it and Barry ultimately leaves. When Rafe hears Kiara's screams from the drains, he tells Barry to flush her out. Rafe needs help with getting the gun that he used to kill Sheriff Peterkin with back, so he goes to Barry for help. In Season 2 Rafe and Barry are still buddies. During this, Barry finds out that Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin. At the end of Season 1, Rafe and Barry went to get revenge on JJ for stealing Barry's money, but they both got beaten up by JJ, Pope and Kiara. When Rafe found out that Sarah and The Pogues stole from Barry, he expressed concern for her and told her what Barry did to his arm when he owed him money. Barry yells at Rafe that he feels like his family looks down on him, his dad having beaten him up and his sister and her friends having robbed him. The two meet again when Barry, mad at Sarah and her friends, goes looking for him at the Country Club and demands that he keeps his sister under control. Rafe then tries to steal money from Ward to repay his debt but Ward catches him and pays Barry a visit instead, beating him up and throwing Rafe out. When Rafe didn't have his money and stated that he needed more time, Barry burned his arm to teach him a lesson. Rafe then tries to repay Barry by offering to sell more cocaine, and allowing Barry to take his bike as colleteral. Rafe owed him money because he used to sell at parties for Barry. Rafe and Barry are first seen together in the third episode of season 1 when Rafe buys cocaine from him. They are first seen on screen in The Forbidden Zone, but they clearly knew each other before then. It is unknown when they met, but they most likely met around the time Rafe's cocaine addiction started. ![]() I can’t believe how long I avoided making slime. THE CHANGING STATES OF MATTER … SLIME TIME! When they can see it from the side, it’s so much easier to notice the details in the matter, especially in the gas bubbles. TINY TIP: Make sure you use clear cups so the children can observe and compare the contents. In this way, it makes this activity perfect for the beginning of the unit. Instead of talking about the changing states of matter, we just identify them. If left alone for a bit, the consistency of the ice cream and the root beer will change, but I don’t use this lesson in that way. In one single treat, kids can visibly observe all three states: a solid, a liquid, and a gas. On deck… more sweet science! This activity isn’t an experiment as much as it is a simple demonstration of the three different states of matter. ![]() For this reason, I love the opportunity it gives kids to go home and “teach” others. The picture at the top of the post□shows the ice cream flip book. There’s an informational reading passage that explains the science behind the ice cream lab, as well as a flip book project that reflects their comprehension. Following the science lab, you can integrate reading and writing with a variety of connected activities that are also provided in the set. My now-grown daughter would add that her fourth grade teacher’s Munchie Math was her favorite math experience ever, and is apparently the only reason she understands fractions to this day. For example, frozen nitrogen will form both the liquid phase and the vapor phase when exposed to normal temperature and pressure.I think food makes most things better, even science. Multiple phase changes can occur at once. For example, if you view the sublimation of dry ice into carbon dioxide gas, the white vapor that is observed is mostly water that is condensing from water vapor in the air into fog droplets. Phase changes aren't always clear when observing a situation. Plasma most often forms from ionization of a gas, although if sufficient energy and enough space are available, it's presumably possible for a liquid or solid to ionize directly into a gas. Plasma: Plasma can recombine to form a gas. Gases form from the sublimation of solids, vaporization of liquids, and recombination of plasma. Gases: Gases can ionize into plasma, condense into liquids, or undergo deposition into solids. Liquids form by condensation of gases and melting of solids. Liquids: Liquids can vaporize into gases or freeze into solids. Solids form by deposition from gases or freezing of liquids. Solids: Solids can melt into liquids or sublime into gases.
